2006. The sleepy village of Oyjorda gathers to observe the most exciting event in memory. For the first time in 400 years, it will be obscured by a total solar eclipse.
Alex Larken, a restless teenager with a penchant for storytelling, digs out her mum’s old camcorder to document this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.
But when the moon passes and the day comes back, everything is not quite as it was before.
As strange events begin to stack up, Alex is pulled down the rabbit hole of a paranormal investigation until she mysteriously disappears, leaving only her camera to tell the tale.
Now, twenty years later, a documentary crew comes to Oyjorda to find out what happened and study the fallout on this tight-knit community. Combining her camera footage with interviews of those closest to Alex, they piece together her story and reconstruct the journey that led to her disappearance. But the truth is rarely simple, and the telling rarely straightforward.
When the story is a story of a story, how can we know what is really true? And when the evidence begins to point to the impossible, what are we willing to believe to make the pieces fit?
This Isn’t Real is a sci-fi docu-drama for the post-truth era. Combining bold characters, clever theatricality and live cinema, this high-tech, high-concept production draws us through the camera lens into a world beyond fact and fiction. As narratives are constructed and truth is turned upside-down, we stare into the mirror and ask if we really know what’s real.
